Candid Review: How does it work?

The Candid clear aligners company was established in 2017 with a simple motive – to help patients regain their confidence with a beautiful smile. Candid attempts to cater to customers’ dental needs without having to spend long hours at an orthodontist’s office, or paying a huge amount of money to get clear retainers. You might think that this is a service offered by multiple companies, but it’ll be good to remember, the Candid affords a much more quality and effective treatment with ten times more involvement from the company.

Remote treatment is a new concept, but Candid has a classic medical approach- your health comes first. The invisible aligners by Candid are made by some of the best orthodontists in the industry. From taking as many as eight visual shots to delivering a free retainer at the end of the treatment- Candid maintains AAO standard.

Why do people love Candid?

Expert Supervision

Candid offers some of the best clear aligners, and aims to deliver some of the best smiles in the world. To achieve this, the company works with a plan- one important part of this plan is looking for strict qualifications when choosing dental professionals that join their time as licensed orthodontists.

These professionals are also required to have at least 20 years of dental experience and 2 years of post-doctoral training in teeth shaping.

Online Follow-Up

Other than being selective and specific about their team of professionals, Candid also aims to afford new smiles to all its customers. This is why they give you a chance to book a video call while you are waiting for the starter kit to arrive.

The video call allows the orthodontist to actually view your teeth and gums which helps determine how long the procedure will be with the right aligners. It ensures also the alignment situation of your teeth is accurate.

Customer Care

The time between receiving the aligners and purchasing the first starter kit is about 2 months. During this time and throughout the rest of the treatment, Candid along with the assigned orthodontist will continue to speak and communicate with you providing tips, updates, and reminders. They will also be available in case you have any questions throughout the program. Once the aligner schedule is completed, Candid will also provide you with a free upper and lower set of retainers.

Unlike the cost of metal braces, at home straightening teeth comes at a fixed price. Candid treatment is not an exception to this rule, no matter what the issue is. Take a look at the table below to understand the fees involved-

Starter kit$95
One-time payment plan$2,400
Installment plan$99 per month for two years and $399 deposit
App-enabled scanner$350 if you’ve started treatment before February 2020

If you want to skip the cost of the starter kit, you can opt for a free scan in the Candid Studio. However, you need to consider the cost of retainers at least twice every year. If instead, you buy aligners after the free scan, the purchase will be fully refundable until a treatment plan is approved.

The Candid Procedure

1. Checking if you’re a candidate

The first assessment of your teeth occurs online on the website. All you have to do is answer a few questions about the kind of misalignment you have and the time when you’d like to start the treatment.

Possible Eligibility

  • Mild to moderate malocclusion
  • Over 16 years of age
  • No baby teeth
  • Overall good dental health

Difficult Eligibility

  • Severe misalignment or spacing
  • Tooth decay or gum disease
  • Bite correction needed
  • A permanent retainer
  • Baby teeth
  • Patient hasn’t been to the dentist recently
  • Dental work is scheduled

Candid is slightly more picky as compared to its competitors about approving the candidates, avoiding any complicated cases and performing due research of your mouth. This is why you will be required to visit a dentist before the treatment starts.

2. Assessing Your Needs

The company strives to deliver the best smiles, thus providing 3D images of what your teeth shall look like once the treatment is completed. You get to see these before you have a chance to move forward which means you have the freedom to accept and approve of the personalized aligner program even before they are manufactured.  You can also visit a Candid studio for the same.

  • In-Studio Registration

A visit made to the Candid Studio takes about 30 minutes. The visit is free, with little chance of anything going wrong. Once you’re in the studio, a trained technician with expertise in Candid technology will take all the necessary steps.

The specialist will make use of an intraoral scanner to get pictures of your mouth through which a model of your dentition will be created. Your case will be given to a designated orthodontist who will create a treatment plan along with a smile model.

You have to sign the consent form which is emailed to you at the time you book your appointment. If you’re below 18, a guardian or parent has to come with you.

  • Starter Kits

The 3-D images are a part of the starter kit and before they are reviewed, there are certain instructions that you have to follow in the kit and refer back to the company. Candid knows that things might go wrong in the first try and thus provides two molding sets. You also get a priority return shipping label that covers the cost which comes with sending your impressions in.

Before the package arrives, you will be able to schedule a video call with the customer service representative from Candid. The person will explain the process that has to be followed when taking your impressions.

Some people might want to redo the impressions. In this case you will be able to get one more starter pack free of cost. This step will also be followed if the given tray does not fit your mouth well. The Candid Co starter kit has the following-

  • instructions for your photos and impressions,
  • gloves,
  • a cheek stretcher,
  • putty and trays (3 top, 2 bottom),
  • a poker tool, and
  • a prepaid return box

3. Approving The Treatment Plan

The diagnostic records which are created go over to your assigned orthodontist. They review these and design a treatment plan for you.  Opting for a Candid Studio is possibly the quickest way to start your treatment. You can expect your treatment to be ready in not more than five days after your appointment. If, instead, you pick at home impressions, it will take about three to four weeks for the records to be approved.

Even if the problem lies only in one arch- upper or lower, Candid will be sure to work with both. This is important to prevent the misalignment of your bite, throughout the process. The pan is received online and teaches the following-

  • The name of your local orthodontist
  • How long you wear each set
  • The number of aligners you receive
  • The duration of the whole treatment,
  • A 3D step-by-step model of your journey, and
  • A link to choose a payment option.

4. Straightening Kit

The custom made clear retainers are given to you, three weeks after your plan is approved. As soon as this arrives you can begin working on your new smile. The straightening kit from Candid Co includes-

  • your custom aligners,
  • an aligner case,
  • whitening foam,
  • a cheek stretcher,
  • the pul tool (to remove aligners),
  • an app-enabled scanner, and
  • chewies.

The different aligners will come in separate packets labeled “First Step,” “Step Two” and so on. This will make it easy for you to keep track. The aligners are stain resistant, BPA and phthalate free with no attachments.

5. Wearing the Aligners

You have to get used to wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours in a day. However, you are not required to do this alone as the Candid app will guide you through the process and send you reminders via emails and texts. For the adjustment period of each pair, try putting them on at night so that most of the painful process takes place at night.

  • Remote Monitoring

In February 2020, Candid introduced the new feature- remote monitoring. This is a 10 day check in you need to make with your assigned orthodontist. By using a device that comes with the Candid straightening tip and your cell-phone, it is possible to scan your mouth. This can give the doctor a chance to do a comprehensive assessment of your treatment.

Presently, only Candid offers at home straightening kit that comes with remote tracking. This ensures that your treatment is carried out with utmost safety. However, this has boosted the price up by $500 as compared to the previous price of $350.

  • Taking Care

The last important stage of your treatment is wearing the retainers. This needs to be done for as long as your new smile must last. At the end of the treatment, you also get a package which sends the following things-

  • top and bottom retainers,
  • retainer case,
  • chewies,
  • whitening foam, and
  • a remover tool.

You might get a harsher lisp as these are made of comparatively thicker material. It is also recommended that you switch these retainers every 6 months. The very first is free and every additional pair costs $99.

The average treatment at Candid will last for an average 6 months (3-10 months). The focus of the treatment is bone biology and safety, making sure that the whole treatment finishes in due time. The longest amount of time taken is 11 months for the most severe cases.

Return and Refund Policy

If you’re not an eligible candidate

If the orthodontist determines that you are not an eligible candidate for Candid’s clear retainer program, your payment will be refunded fully. This will apply to the following situations-

  • payments made for the Starter Kit only;
  •  if you have paid for the Starter Kit and aligner treatment up front;
  • or if you have paid for aligner treatment up front at one of our Candid Studios

However it will not be applicable in case you return the starter kit with unusable or distorted models. In such cases, if you want an additional starter kit, you will be given one for free

Remote monitoring treatment

Candid wants to make sure that you are happy with the results you get, and it ensures that you are left with a new smile. If you want to receive a new treatment plan for extra aligners without having to pay more, then your orthodontist must forward the need of a new treatment plan to the company.

It is also necessary that you follow the prescriptions of your orthodontist by wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours per day. You need to complete the remote monitoring scans with the frequency that is requested by your orthodontist, or you will not be eligible for a refund or return. If you want additional treatment, you will also need to save all the aligners from your previous treatment.

Kit Return Policy

The starter kit or aligner kit cannot be used for anyone else, thus the company does not accept any returns. Once the company receives your Consent to Treat Form and Medical/Dental History, your Starter Kit order will be processed and is not eligible for a refund (unless your orthodontist, after reviewing your diagnostic records; Consent to Treat Form, Medical/Dental History, PVS impressions, photos and other information), determines that you are not a suitable candidate for Candid’s clear aligner treatment)

Candid Features

Candid Co. starter kits begin at $95 per kit which two sets impressions. The invisible aligners are priced at $2,400. You are provided with payment plans which start at $99 in a month with the help of third party financing companies like Affirm.

You also get one set of free retainers that is provided to you soon after the treatment is completed. For every aligner kit that it sells, Candid goes on to donate $25 to Smile Train- this charity provides for free, safe cleft palate treatments for children all over the planet.

Online Remote Monitoring

When you get your aligners kit, other than the teeth whitening foam and aligners you will also get certain equipment to help scan your teeth at home. This material has been provided to help keep track of your treatment without the need to visit Candid Studio, thus making this treatment purely remote. The only thing you need to do is download the Candid app on your Smartphone to help scan your smile with all the equipment within the kit. Other than this, you are also eligible for a check-up with your local orthodontist every 10 days.

Candid has chosen the orthodontist vs dentist format to ensure that the right dental professionals cater to your medical needs. The professionals working with Candid always have enough experience to establish your eligibility. They  also know how the aligners are going to alter your teeth depending on the inspections and checkups that you have gone through over the years.

Your personal orthodontist is chosen by Candid Co. as per the state you reside in. This helps to keep them within reach locally while enhancing your personalization experience. The idea behind this is to eliminate any high costs that come with visiting the local orthodontist, while ensuring that the process remains simple enough to follow at home.

How is Candid different?

Some features which make Candid different from other dentistry services include-
– Candid works exclusively with orthodontists (doctors who have specialized in straightening teeth). The orthodontists working with Candid have an average of 20 years experience.
– Candid sends you all the aligners you’ll need in your treatment at once, instead of delivering new sets one by one.
– You also get a set of free retainers at the end of the treatment.

Who is eligible for treatment in Candid?

Candid decides if you’re an eligible candidate for your treatment. This can be done by taking a short survey that talks about the concerns you would like to correct, you history with retainers and braces and so on. The three main reasons why you might not be eligible for Candid are-
– Your case is beyond the premise of mild and moderate imperfections which can be treated by orthodontic attention.
– You have not seen a dentist recently to check for any cavities or decay.
– You are currently using a permanent retainer.

How do I clean my aligners?

– Rinse the invisible braces in lukewarm water that is neither too hot nor cold.
– Take some toothpaste in a soft-bristled retainer brush or toothbrush. Brush the entire retainer inside and out with small, circular motions.
– Once you are done completing the brush inside and out, rinse it once more in lukewarm water.
– If you notice calcium buildup, soak this retainer in a retainer cleaning solution or a denture.

What are clear aligners made of?

While it can vary by manufacturer, clear aligners are made from plastic polymers that are moldable at high temperatures (thermoplastic) such as-
– Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol-modified (PET-G),
– Polypropylene Polycarbonate (PC),

– Ethylene Vinyl Acetate, among others.
